Put the Cup in Cake
The colors are endless, the design, unlimited and the price is right! Cupcakes are a great alternative, especially for that DIY bride who is looking for a less expensive way to do her wedding cake. Stack 'em sideways, up, down, and all around for a fun and unique display that will knock the socks off your guests. If you're wanting that "cutting the cake" experience, make a small, round cake for you and your groom to cut and get for the pictures!Put the Ball in Cake
Cake ball. Two words, one love. If you have never had a cake ball, get to your closest bakery and find one! Think cupcake, but bite size and round. Cake balls are also a less expensive alternative and very DIY friendly. They're very creamy on the inside and have a bit of a crunch on the outside (they are dipped in chocolate). It's the perfect mix of textures, and you can't eat just one!
Brides are getting creative by putting the cake balls on a stick and calling it a cake pop. Then, putting the cake pop's in cardboard tiers to make a cake pop galore display! You can also keep them in their ball form, and pile them high on different cake stands for a look that is sure to grab your guests attention!
Cookies, Filling and Oh So Thrilling!
Wedding cake with a twist… literally. One of my good friends and her husband both have an incomparable love for Oreo's. They would pick Oreo's over cake any day, and especially on their wedding day. The cake was perfect, including the colors. Their bridal party wore black and white so the colors matched perfectly. An added bonus, they had tiny shot glasses of milk to make the perfect dessert.
For Those of Us Who Can't Pick Just One…
If you're like me, (and you probably are because you're searching for wedding cake alternatives) you couldn't pick just one design with one flavor of cake. My reception was in a home, so I chose to do a cake table with three different cakes.
First was my wedding cake, which was vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream icing, dressed with fresh candied violets. Next, a chocolate cake with chocolate icing and salted caramel drizzle. And third, vanilla butternut cream cake with vanilla butternut icing. This one was a special, heirloom recipe that's been in my family for years. We usually only get it at Christmas, but my mom decided to make an exception just this once.We set the cakes on different tiers of crystal and silver cake stands for a beautiful display, and added fresh flowers all around! So, if you can't settle on just one, having multiple cake options is always a plus.
Pie in the Sky Cake
And no, I'm not talking about pizza! Ever heard of a Moon Pie? Yes you read that right, a Moon Pie. It's marshmallow pie sandwich, which is a speciality in Mobile, Alabama. I saw a wedding where the couple was proud of their Mobile and Moon Pie heritage, so they decided to have their groom's cake made entirely out of the tasty graham cracker and marshmallow dessert! I thought it was a grand idea to showcase the history of the city they loved and of course their love for this delectable dessert.
So are you feeling better now about your non-traditional ways? Maybe show this blog to your conventional mother to help her see that your alternative wedding cake can be as elegant as the old-fashioned ways, but with a new a modern twist! Happy eating!
