First Things First…
What's the difference between a suit and a tuxedo?
For someone who wears a suit everyday, a tuxedo gives them the opportuity to dress up a little more. As far as physical characteristics, the main separation between a tux and suit is one thing: Satin. Because tuxedos are meant to look seamless, tuxes are trimmed in satin on the lapels, pockets and pants. Tuxes are traditionally worn with a bowtie and cummerbund. But, it has also
become acceptable to wear a waistcoat (vest) and long tie. Shiny, patent leather shoes are also worn with tuxedos.
Which should I wear for my wedding?
This is ultimately up to you and the bride, but you should keep the bride's gown and your location in mind when deciding. If your bride is wearing a very formal gown, then you should lean towards the more formal black-tie look of a tux.
Elements of a Tux- Jacket Lapels, Shirt Cuffs & Collars
Jacket Lapel Styles
- Peak– Peak lapels literally peak, or point upward towards the shoulder. The peak lapel is the most traditional type of lapel, and the standard for black-tie formal.
- Notch– Notch lapels have a notch or v-shaped cutout where the lapel meets the collar. While they are seen on tuxedo jackets, these lapels are considered informal for a tuxedo and are more acceptable for a suit jacket.
- Shawl– This lapel style is smooth and continuous. It is a more modern styled lapel and gives the jacket a sleeker, slimmer look. The shawl lapel is great alternative to the peak lapel for a tuxedo, and is considered too formal for a suit.
Shirt Cuffs
While there are many styles of cuffs, these are the most common to be worn with a tuxedo.
- Two Button or Three Button Square or Round– These are the standard cuffs that can be found on most dress shirts. Just make sure the buttons match the material of your lapel. Two and three buttion cuffs can also come in an angled cut, which allows for more personal style.
- French/Double Cuff– The French cuff is the cuff of choice for traditional tuxedos. They are also called a double cuff because they are twice the length of the standard cuff in order to be folded back and closed with a cufflink.
Shirt Collars
- Turn Down– The turn down collar is the traditional, black-tie collar of choice. It works with both a bow tie and long tie, and can be used with your tux or a suit.
- Wing– A wing tip collar is considered more white-tie formal than black-tie formal, but can be worn with either. The corners are bent and stick out slightly. It should only be worn with a bowtie. Some people choose to tuck the corners behind their tie for a sleeker look, or let it rest on the top of the tie.
- Mandarin– If you are looking for a modern look that is not at formal, the mandarin collar is for you. It is generally not worn with a tie because of the stand up collar.
