Padrinos (Spanish for Godparents): The tradition of godparents in Latin & Hispanic Weddings.
A religious tradition, as well as a culture one, Godparents play a significant role in Latin & Hispanic wedding tradition. Godparents, as tradition goes, will pay for the wedding and act as mentors for the couple.
This tradition is rooted in the religious tradition surrounding Godparents during baptism. In Hispanic & Latin cultures the godparents provide financial and emotional support to help the new couple during their engagement, wedding and also into marriage.
Special significance is paid to the Padrinos in the wedding program. True tradition dictates that the Godparents give the bride and groom a rosary and a bible during the ceremony. The rosary will be used in the Roman Catholic wedding ceremony.

Was just curious regarding sponsors for a wedding. What do they represent and for what reason and who asked to be a sponsor. Is this the same as padrinos as explained in the info of the traditional godparents involvement.
Jamie Jamison Adams says
Padrinos are Godparents which usually have a religious nature or a long-standing and close relationship with the couple.
Although I do not agree with the practice, some couples solicit companies to "sponsor" their wedding as a way to obtain free services. Their premise is the company will get free publicity through the wedding.

can a grandmother be a godparent for the wedding?
Tanya Giraldo says
Michelle,
If the bride is having the godparents tradition for her wedding, it can really be anyone. Talk to the bride and groom and tell them of your wishes. See what they think and decide on what role you can have in the wedding if the role of godparent is already decided.
