To some, planning your wedding hairstyle is almost as important as the wedding itself! Okay, so that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but still a girl's hair is very important. There are so many variations that it can be a little overwhelming. Here are a few helpful tips and ideas to help you through this daunting task.
1. Get Wedding Hairstyle Ideas
First of all, look for wedding hairstyle ideas. There are tons of places to find inspiration: online, offline, books, magazines, etc. My suggestions would be to find a good wedding website with a wide variety of bridal portraits. You could also try searching Google images, Flickr or our own wedding photo gallery. Picking up a few bridal magazines wouldn't hurt either. (Although I'm sure you've got tons of these already!) Another great resource is YouTube. Print out your favorites or rip them out of the magazines to compile the ultimate collage of wedding hair! Keep in mind, with extensions and other stylist tricks, you can practically do any hairstyle you can imagine.2. Veil or No Veil? That is the question.
Contrary to popular belief you don't have to wear a wedding veil. There are many great wedding veil alternatives. For instance, wedding hair accessories like tiaras, headbands, and jewelry can be worn instead. Consider these beforehand. Most hairstyles will work in junction with a veil, however hairstyles that include things like flowers or jewelry can be more cumbersome when wearing a veil. These items can rip or tear the veil if not fastened properly.
Consider getting your hair done in the style you've settled on before shopping for your wedding veil. Take lots of pictures with your digital camera to see exactly how you and your hairstyle will look on your big day! If you are planning an up do you should take your veil to your stylist and plan to incorporate it into your look.
3. Styles – Have it YOUR way
Up do, Half up, Long, Curly, Short, Vintage, Modern … So many good ideas it's almost impossible to pick just one. In some ways this style will be with you forever in the vast photos and memories of your wedding day. Test your hairstyle choice well in advance. Make sure to pick a great style based on YOU wearing it, not how the model on the page looks with it. You need to see what you will look like in the hairstyle from all angles, with and without the veil.
Consider your face shape.
With your hair pulled back, what shape is your face?
- Round Faces – Try something face-framing, with bangs. Give the illusion of length. A-symmetric styles work great for this type of face. Avoid shorter cuts and bobs.
- Square Faces – A top-heavy, fuller hair style with bangs is ideal. Avoid overly short cuts.
- Oval Faces – This face shape is ideal and typically works well with any hairstyle.
- Heart-shaped Faces – This is a great shape that works well with shorter cuts like the pixie, or bob. Avoid straight bangs or slicked back hair.
- Pear Faces – You want to create the illusion of width in the forehead. An a-symmetric looks work best.
- Diamond Faces – Curly and long with no bangs or slight bangs is a good bet.
- Oblong Faces – Choose a hairstyle with width and length. Avoid long and straight.
Take your body into account.
At your wedding, you want the most flattering look. If you are a shorter you might want an up do to give the illusion of being taller. Conversely, if you are tall you won't need that extra boost. Also very short hair on tall women can look masculine. Full figured or bottom-heavy women should avoid short hair because it can make them look larger.
Consider your hair type.
Most of this can be corrected in the styling, but hair types simply won't do certain things. Some hair cannot be curled, others cannot be straight; your hair-do needs to keep it's shape for an extended period of time. Some hair just doesn't cooperate, even with the mega gel and super hair spray. Picking a style you KNOW will last is very important.
Keep your style in mind.
If you're doing a contemporary modern wedding, consider a modern, edgy a-symmetrical hairstyle. If you're going for vintage, try a classic french twist. The beach? Keep it down, loose and free-flowing. Do a little research on your wedding. (I know, I know, more planning, but it's worth it!) What style is your dress in? Does your location have a particular look you can play off of? You're hairstyle should match YOUR wedding.
Color me beautiful.
Drastic changes like hair color and significant cuts should be done long before the wedding. You can always freshen up these looks before hand, but if you get all your hair chopped off 2 days prior to your big day there is not a lot to do about that. Take lots of pictures of your hair when it looks it's very best to show your wedding hairstylist.
Colorful hair accessories are a great way to incorporate your wedding colors while still keeping a traditional look. For instance, your colors might be teal and copper but most likely, as a bride you will be in white. Use teal ribbons and flowers in your hair as well as in your wedding bouquet to keep your over all look consistent.
The key to a great wedding style you will be forever satisfied with is planning ahead. Try out the great styles you like to find the perfect look for you.
