Wedding and Party Network:
The difference between a wedding coordinator and wedding planner/consultant is more involved than you might think. Typically a consultant/planner is involved in the entire process while a coordinator may be involved for the wedding day and/or day prior to the wedding only. According to the Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants (ACPWC), consultants are rewarded levels based on achievement. A certificate of completion is Level I, professional title is Level II, and certified title is Level III. More information can be found on the requirements to move through these levels at the ACPWC website.
It is a good rule of thumb to include the fee for your wedding consultant in your total budget. However, if your wedding consultant is in charge of the finances, make sure that he or she knows the total budget minus his or her fee. For instance, if your total budget is $10,000 while your consultant fee is $500, let your consultant know that you only wish to spend $9,500 on the rest of your wedding. Having this information in writing when hiring your wedding consultant will spare both parties a lot of potential headache in the future.
The going rate for consultants varies. Region, wedding size, and level of involvement all play a major part in a consultant's fee. Most consultants will be able to give an estimate once you've answered a few questions. This can typically be done via phone.
