Ring In The New Year With Gatsby Style!

Really, there isn't any better theme for a New Year's Eve Party than The Great Gatsby. Of course I have read the book. Of course I know it takes place in the dead of summer. I'm telling you that doesn't matter.

New Year's Eve is a night that celebrates the past, even paints it in a decadent golden light, and drinks lasciviously to welcome in an uncertain future with wild abandon… well, I say you can't get more Gatsby than that. Plus, who doesn't want to host a party where magic elegance drips off every possible surface? We'll show you how to create some 1920s style that will make everyone want to kick up their heels to ring in the new year!

Decorations

Think glamor, shiny metallics, glitter and lights! As many and as much as you can manage. If possible, try to decorate each and every selection of the party space. Don't leave any bare walls or everyday fixtures untouched. This is the time to go crazy with the details. Your local party store will save the day here.

Have a large empty wall? Create big texture and color with gold, silver and white streamers. Twist two colors together and tape to the wall in a pattern of parallel strips. Covered the entire space, making sure the twists are spaced equally. Tack a line of metallic balloons around the edges to hide the ends of the streamers but also to create some depth. There! You'll have an inexpensive and easy decor option that will help create the festive atmosphere you want.

Have any old fur or faux fur coats or wraps? Drape them over an end table for a lush look and feel. Sprinkle metallic confetti across tables and shelves so every surface has some eye-catching sparkle. Tack long 1/2in curling ribbon of different length from the ceiling so it dangles and sways with the movement of the night. Just remember, this is one time you can't overdo it.

Put The Internet to Good Use!

Add a little more visual oomph to your party. Use your computer or TV to stream Youtube videos featuring scenes from The Great Gatsby film! Just search "Great Gatsby party scenes" and add the clips to your favorites. Leave the sound off and let the visuals play on a loop. There are excerpts from the movie and music videos that relish in all those lovely Baz Luhrmann production designs elements. You and your guests will love the energy of those positively enviable dance scenes.

For optimal dancing opportunities, plan your music ahead of time. If you need ideas you could start with the new film's eclectic soundtrack. Also throw in some fun jazz age music like the original Charleston dance.

Food

With a focus on drinking and dancing, you'll want to go light on the food but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be spectacular. Fancy hors d'oeuvres are definitely the way to go. If you are short on time, find a caterer and enjoy the night with the rest of your guests instead of slaving over tiny beautiful finger foods. You won't regret it!

Salads were very popular in the 1920s. An updated and party-friendly version might be a salad kebabs. Italian caprese on skewers would be delicious and very fitting. Shrimp cocktails will look beautiful and would be more of a people-pleaser over the oysters mentioned in story.

Individual lemon cakes, however are also straight from the book and would be such a sweet way to celebrate. Anything rich and decadent will delight your guests like chocolate truffles and candied nuts.

Drinks

Just because Gatsby partied during Prohibition, that didn't stop the drinks from flowing at his fabulous soirees . Elegant cut-glass punch bowls were very popular and great for serving a crowd. Drinks called The Bee's Knees, Sidecar, and Gin Rickey were popular and might be worth revisiting at your party.

And champagne. Lots of champagne is in order as per the demands of both the Gatsby story and the holiday. What could be more gorgeous than a towering champagne pyramid? Have you ever seen one? We say built it and they will come!

Surprisingly, it's not that hard – it just requires a little daring. You can use plastic champagne glasses to take away some of the risk. We recommend having a friend help with the set up and the pouring. Big or small, this process actually goes faster than you think so start pouring your pyramid just before midnight. Make an event out of the pouring. How fun to watch and all the glasses fill from top to bottom! Be sure to snap a few pictures of your bubbling creation then everyone can grab a glass – starting from the top! – and toast during the midnight countdown. We love this simple how-to video.

Winter Solstice Extravaganza

The Winter Solstice falls on December 21st, and it is not only the first official day of winter but also the shortest day of the year. People of all cultures and backgrounds have celebrated the Winter Solstice because once this night is past, the hours of darkness will again begin to shrink and the daylight hours will start to lengthen. Many believed this celebration was actually a necessary component to help coax the sun back into the world, that it helped the sun to fight off the dark and cold of winter.

The Solstice celebration prepares for the reawakening of Mother Nature and the reinvigoration of the sun. It is an event intended to stave off the darkness in anticipation of the coming spring. Can you think of a better reason to throw a party?

Decorate with Nature

Decorations should be heavy on candles, pine cones and evergreen plants. The candles represent a bygone age when they were the only source of illumination during the long periods of darkness. And if you want to remember the original reasons for the celebration, the candles can represent the waning sun and act as a call for it to return to full strength. Also, if you have a fireplace, you should fire it up! Nothing is more fitting in a Winter Solstice party than a roaring fire!

The pine cones and evergreens act as your nod to the natural world. These are the trees and plants that thrive during the winter months and they also emit a wonderful aroma to imbue your home with the spirit of the occasion. If you have a Christmas tree, this will work fine! After all, that's why the Christmas tradition uses one in the first place. You just need to turn off the electric lights to preserve the candle-lit atmosphere.

Hearken Back When Preparing Your Snacks

Like the decorations, you want to make your snacks as natural as possible. Seasonal nuts and dried fruits are great, authentic options, and you can never go wrong with apples! Spiced cider is always a crowd-pleaser, and various cheeses would fit in perfectly. Before supermarkets, people had to make do with what was available locally and what they could store effectively. Anything grown in your area or naturally preserved would be acceptable to offer your guests.

A Winter Solstice party can be great fun, and it's a perfect way to have some fun with friends before Christmas or have one last blowout after Hanukkah. The decorations are easy because they're growing all around you, and the food is a snap. The idea is to eat, drink and be merry and that's a concept everyone can get behind!

Host a Gingerbread House Decorating Party

Decorating gingerbread houses is a classic holiday activity. The great thing about it is it can be a party theme for kids OR adults because it allows you to get in touch with your creative side. Kids love that, and so do adults. Everyone also loves candy, so it's a win-win. So, get your favorite candies, some hot glue or icing, and roll up your sleeves for a gingerbread house decorating party.

How do you setup a gingerbread decorating party? It's easy. Just gather all your supplies and create a decorating station for each person. Lay out the pieces for the gingerbread houses with the hot glue gun so everyone can put their house together. Then, down the center of your table place the candies for decorating the houses with so everyone can share. Need ideas for what candies to use? Here are some ideas for candies that work well for gingerbread houses:

  • Chewing gum (for shingles or wood siding)
  • M&Ms
  • Skittles
  • Candy corn
  • Lifesavers (stacked together to make posts)
  • Red hots
  • Smarties
  • Peppermints (for windows or the tops of trees) Or you could also use a sucker for trees

Of course, the possibilities are practically endless. Take your favorite candy, think about its' shape, and see what creative way you can use it for your house. Thinking outside the box is a great way to ensure your gingerbread house is unique.

Decorating Inspiration

Basic Gingerbread House: The simplest design to go by is using graham crackers to make a simple, one-story house. Stick them together with hot glue or icing to make the bottom, top, and sides of the house. Then diagonal them to make the rooftop. If you want, you can use candy or another snack food to layer on top of the roof to give it some texture. This makes a small house, but it's great for kids to be able to do and decorate. You can always keep it going and add a second, third, or fourth(!) story onto your house. You can also break some crackers in half and make a chimney.

Adding That Extra Something: For rooftops, use gumdrops, vanilla wafers, mini cookies, or mini frosted Shredded Wheat. For shutters, you can use mini candy bars or Andes mints. For fences, layer some pretzel sticks or candy canes. A neat idea for an ice skating pond is to use blue mints microwaved on parchment paper until they melt. For snow you can use confectioner's sugar or edible glitter. There are a ton of ideas out there, just get creative with it and make it your own.

Gingerbread houses are perfect for you and your kids to both get involved with together. It's also another great excuse to host a holiday party. So, hurry up, start planning and get your creative juices flowing!

House Decorating: Get your closest friends together and meet at one of your houses, break out all of your Christmas decorations and get to decorating. It can be a little daunting trying to know where to start from year to year, so with help from friends you can get it done faster, plus spend quality time with girlfriends. Have some finger foods set out to snack on as you go. It's also smart to have a girls night with purpose.

Family Dinner Rehearsal with Friends: It's usually standard that within your group of friends someone will be hosting a big family dinner/get together during the holiday season. If you are nervous about the job of hosting, or just want to ease some anxiety, invite friends or family you're comfortable with for a practice night. Cook some of the foods you're planning on putting on the menu, experiment with new recipes, try out a table setting, etc. Practice makes perfect! And your friends can give you suggestions as well.

Silver Theme: This is a fun one to do with friends who still love the traditional winter and Christmas colors. Make this party all about the color silver, one of the most winter-friendly colors. Thanksgiving Dinner Party Ideas

Want something exciting to do this fall? Host a dinner party in honor of Thanksgiving for your closest friends. Yes, hosting a dinner party can be daunting and unattainable if you think too much into it. However, the key is to plan out a great theme to follow and Wedding and Party Network has two that we think we'll win your guests over.

Breakfast for Dinner: You can put a new spin on your party by having breakfast for dinner! This will definitely put a new twist on your party, but still be delicious as ever. Make it season-appropriate by having pumpkin pancakes or waffles, a variety of muffins shaped like leaves, sweet potato hash browns, and serve apple cider with your breakfast. Put together a few cups of apple juice, about 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, a cinnamon stick, and an apple slice. There you have it, a delicious breakfast for dinner that goes well with the season.

Split up: In addition to your regular get-together with the entire family, extend the weekend by having separate parties for the girls and guys. The guys can have football-themed foods and watch the game together, and the girls can spend Friday or Saturday cooking together and catching up. You can also use this time to share your favorite holiday recipes. Have your friends bring their cookbooks, provide a bunch of index cards, and get busy copying/modifying recipes!

A lot of people are resistant of change, especially during a holiday, so let your guests know how you've decided to celebrate by sending invitations out in advance if you have the time. Of course, you can't go wrong with celebrating Thanksgiving with the standard rituals. A big turkey or ham, plenty of veggies, and a banana pudding are big hits and will still give you a reason to get together!

Throwing a Frugal First Birthday Bash

When my daughter turned one last fall, it was all I could do not to go all out and spend lots of money on a big bash. After all, it was her first birthday! Not actually having the tons of money to spend, I had to be frugal for my little girl’s big day. First birthday parties can be big productions if you have the money and time to put into them, but if not, there are plenty of ways to still throw a great party.

Utilize The Season: Instead of buying every single Minnie Mouse party item the stores have to offer and never using any of it again, make it about whatever season your little one’s birthday falls on. My daughter’s birthday is in October, so we put pumpkins on the tables, used hay bales for seating, cooked up a couple crock-pots of chili and had her party right in our backyard.

However, if your child's has a spring birthday, take advantage of the nice weather and rent a pavilion at a park. Most of the time they are free and there are plenty of natural options for entertainment for the kids. You can also have beautiful arrangements with fresh, spring florals and use food that's in season to create tasty treats.

Get Family Involved: Most likely your family members will be just as excited (if not more) to celebrate with your little one. So, take some stress off yourself and let them help. Delegate between them, having someone make their own pot of chili while someone else handles a couple of yummy desserts.

Chances are, your mother-in-law is going to be dying to pitch in as much as she can. Recruit moms and siblings to help run errands or help decorate once the big day arrives. This frees up your time to set up party decorations or do last-minute prep.

Fall Birthday Setup
Do It Yourself: The internet is full of DIY ideas for parties. This route tends to be a little bit more budget friendly, and it gives your child’s party a personal, rather than completely commercial, touch. One thing we did for my daughter was order cheap prints online of her first year of life and display them in a timeline for guests to enjoy.

It was fun to go back and pick a couple of pictures of her from each month and see how much she had changed in only a year. Your family will love to see the transformation. Party favors, while not totally necessary, are still a fun way to put a finishing touch on the festivities, which again, you'll find lots of ideas on Pinterest that are definitely DIY friendly.

Realize it’s Not About You: When it comes down to it, the day is really for your child. Keep in mind that they are not going to notice, or even remember, that you hand wrote/stamped/decorated all 47 of the party invitations. They are just going to enjoy being around everyone they love. Add to that by getting to open some carefully selected presents and eat cake, and they will be smiling for days.

Hit a Homerun with Your World Series Party

It's World Series Baseball!!

That's right sports fans, the boys of summer take the field this fall in a final showdown between the two best teams in the game. Come on, you know you'll be watching. You sat through the season and paid attention to the playoffs, but now it's time to get off your duff and throw a bash as big as the series itself! Your team didn't make the cut? That's okay, you can still have a great time! Invite some friends, fix some food and get ready for the party of the year!

The Menu

Don't get too hung up on what to provide. For a baseball party, all you really need is ballpark fare. A fridge full of beer (or sodas if that's your preference), a cheese ball, chips and pretzels, hot dogs and peanuts will see you through. Feel free to throw in some cold-cut sandwiches if you feel like you should provide something more substantial.

If you really want to go all out, you can whip up a batch of hot wings or offer to grill steaks, but that's purely up to you. In my experience, the lighter options work just fine. People will be focused on the game, so snacks are perfect.

Decoration

You can approach this from two different angles. You can choose one team to represent and decorate your living room/den with those colors and/or memorabilia, or you can divide the viewing area straight down the middle and decorate each side with a team's colors. I like the second option, especially if it's not a local team in the game. You can then separate your friends into two groups and let them enjoy rooting against the other side as much as rooting for their own team!

If you are going the one-team route, try to use as much memorabilia as you can. Hats, jerseys, t-shirts, whatever you already have on hand would be great. You might even buy paper plates with the logo stamped directly on them or provide cups in that theme. If you don't have officially licensed cups, buy plastic cups in the team's colors.

The TV

The 18" just isn't going to cut it. Today, everything is high def and larger than life. It's what's expected, and your party-goers will be disappointed if they are offered less than a big-screen.

Perhaps purchasing one is too far outside your budget. That's understandable, but there are still options available to you. Even if YOU don't own one, you probably know someone who does. See if you can borrow it for the night. Make sure you invited that friend to the party also, and they probably won't mind at all. Still, if that won't work for some reason, it's also possible to rent one. That would be my last choice, but worth it for a big event like the World Series.

Glitz and Glam Emmy's Watch Party

The Emmy’s are here! I repeat the Emmy’s are here! It’s time to celebrate the love and emotional tie we have to our favorite TV characters. Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Downton Abbey, and Glee all need to be cheered on right? Here is the best way to do this. It’s another excuse to throw a party!

Themed Party Food

Personally, this would be a great excuse to get all the girls over for a male free night. The easiest way to get them here is to offer food and select beverages. I suggest food catered to your favorite show. Mad Men martinis and grilled filet mignons go perfectly with Mad Men and their life in style. Try these fun entrees and drinks to fit the theme:

  • Champagne

Chic Meals

  • Filet Mignon Wrapped in Bacon
  • Bite Sized Twice Baked Potatoes
  • Swedish Meatballs
  • Mixed Green Salad with Parmigiano Crisps

Fan of Downton Abbey? Serve up yummy tea with tea cakes. Or, maybe you're a fan of Glee? If so, think about having slushy themed cupcakes or actual slushies. Just like within the television show, if you don't like someone or the winner, throw the slushy at the screen. Just remember, you have to clean that up.

Glitz & Glam Touches

What about those special added details? Well, don’t worry about sporting fine china for this event. Simply buy gold paper plates and supply gold and white star napkins for extra Emmy’s fun. This just clears up the time from cleaning dishes to drooling over John Hamm.

Decorating for this party should be a breeze. Simply get red, gold and white candles in all different heights. Place them accordingly over black tulle by the food in a corner to add to the looks of your well-made meal. I’m sure it will be beautiful!

Saying Thanks

As the Emmy’s come to a close, it’s time for everyone to head home. For party favors, give your girls personalized wine glasses. If you’re a great painter, simply paint a creative design that fits your guests’ personality. If you are like me and are only good with paint pens, draw your design and cook your glasses in the oven at 325 degrees for 40 minutes. It seals the paint pen design for washing and wear and These party favors will end the night as a success.

Great food, great decorations and great party favors are all the makings of a great awards night. Who says all the awards are handed out at the Emmy’s?

Host Your Own Backyard Movie Night!

Do you love movies? Are you looking for fun activities to wrap up those last few summer nights? Host a movie night in the backyard that will become everyone's favorite summer memory. With a little planning, you can transform your backyard into an outdoor theater!

Tickets, please.

Send out invitations to friends, family and neighbors about a week ahead of time. Here is a link to a tutorial to make your own super cool movie ticket invites! These are great because they look just like a theater ticket and also remind everyone to bring their blankets or lawn chairs.

Be sure and check what time the sun will be setting on your party date. Make your start time just a little before dark so everyone has time to settle in by the time it is dark enough to see the screen well.

Set The Stage

Decorate the entrance to your backyard with some colorful balloons and streamers. You can even print out your over movie poster on your home printer by creating a tiled print. Add a "Now Showing" sign to complete the theater look.

Unless you want to move your giant flat screen TV outside (That's ok if you do. High Definition!)  you are going to need a projector and a screen.

There are some mini projectors that you can get for your tablet (even your smartphone!) if you want to keep it pretty low key. If you already have a flat surface like the side of your house, garage door, or a tall fence, hanging a white sheet can do the trick for a DIY screen. Make sure and test everything well beforehand to work out all the kinks before guests arrive.

If you are throwing a blast to be remembered, there are lots of local event rentals that have everything needed for a picture-perfect night outdoors. Designate an area in front of your screen for blankets with lawn chairs making up the back row. And don't forget to stock up on some citronella candles to keep away pests. The little extra candle light will shine the way to the snack bar when someone needs a refill.

Concession Stand Snacks

Lots of popcorn is on top of the list. But don't forget drinks. Sodas, iced sweet, lemonade, or something stronger? Whatever will complete your movie experience, consider picking up some disposable cups with lids. It's just like the movies and will prevent spills when setting drinks on lawn chairs or in the grass.

Pick up some theater-sized boxes of classic candy like Milk Duds, M&Ms and Red Vines that guests can share. Atmosphere complete without the sticky floor!

When the sun sets and the movie flickers, lighting up everyone's face, your backyard will be filled with that unmistakable movie magic. Enjoying your favorite film outside is a great way to celebrate at home. Summer is passing fast so don't wait too long or you'll have to really wrap up!
