Mascot Party Gives Singles Something to Talk About

I was single a long time, and there's nothing worse than going to a "single's party" where everyone sits around looking at each other, fidgeting with beverages and not talking. While hosts mean well, it can be very awkward if you don't have something to open people up once you bring them together.

This idea would work for high schools or colleges: throw a mascot party where people either dress up as their alma mater mascot or wear a shirt with their mascot and school name on it. If you're inviting people who don't know each other, provide a simple nametag upon arrival. People can mingle, checking out where each other went to school, and may even find they have mutual friends, grew up in the same town, went to the same high school, etc. You can also plan this kind of party around a sporting event, if the group is into sports. This is a great "mixer" idea for co-workers, church groups, neighbors, or any other group you're trying to socialize with.

Provide a nice spread of appetizers, desserts and beverages. It's always easier to get to know people over a bowl of homemade chili or a slice of chocolate cheesecake. If you really want to push the envelope, have a contest for the best singer of their alma mater song. Give a gift card to a local restaurant or mall to the winner.  You could also ask everyone to share their funniest high school or college memory, which is great for getting to know people, and that's what this mascot party is all about.

Party Do and Don'ts (Party At My House)

When you give a party at your own home, it is best to follow a few do's and don'ts.  That way you don 't end up resenting your party guest, and they don't go off grumbling about your bad party hosting.

Do put away any item or items you don't want broken.  For instance, great-grandma's irreplaceable Ming vase.  Accidents happen, and the worst thing you can do as a host is to spend your time hoping no one breaks your prized possessions or heirloom pieces.

Don't leave rooms unlocked or doors open to rooms or areas you don't want guests to be in or see . Humans are well, a bit nosey and curious.  So you must help those who are curious and take away temptation to peek by locking doors.

Do put away pets. Some people don't like pets or may even have allergies.  As a good host, you need to consider your guests.  If you're unable to lock your pet in a room away from the party, then I suggest lodging them at a kennel for the day of the party.

Don't forget to remove your prescription drugs from any of the bathrooms or the kitchen. This is especially important if your party will include children or teenagers.

Do make sure you have enough food and drink. If you're hosting a hors d'oeuvre party, you'll need 10-15 appetizers per person. For a dinner party make sure you have plenty of servings to go around and add about 3-4 extra servings.  You never know who might bring a guest or if someone has a big appetite. You want enough drinks to keep people happy.  You can ask a local wine and spirit store to make suggestions on types and quantities. Don't forget some soft drinks and water.

Don't forget you're the host not the waitperson. For informal parties, it is acceptable to place the food buffet style, and fix the party-goers one drink then tell them to help themselves.  If you're doing a more formal party, you may need to hire bar-staff and wait-staff.

Throw Your Own Birthday Party!

Sure Miss Manners may not approve, but what's wrong with throwing your own birthday party?  In my opinion, not a single thing.  Let's look at all the pro's of throwing your own birthday party.

  1. You know what theme you want.
  2. You know the exact type of cake and food you want.
  3. You know all the people you want at your party.

I could go on, but I think you get the point. It's all about you and what you want, and who better to give you the perfect party than you?

Let me take you through my birthday party, given to me by me! First, the invitations: they are Scooby Doo (yes the cartoon character), which is my party theme. Yes, I know I'm an adult and Scooby Doo  is for children.  However, not if it's what I want.  And I want Scooby Doo. I chose Scobby Doo as my theme based on a few reasons: First – Scooby Doo is a great cartoon character. Second – the year of my birth 1969, was when Scooby Doo first aired.  I plan on having all my guest dress as Scooby Doo characters.

Now for the Scooby snacks. I will have spinach dip with chips and label it Shaggy's dip, Great Dane subs (cold cut sandwiches) and mystery van wings with ac-7 sauce (spicy chicken wings with ranch dip). And of course, I can't forget a huge Scooby and friends cake complete with Velma, Shaggy, Fred and Daphne ….yummy! Did you know they have a cocktail called the Scooby? You can bet that will be mixed and consumed at my Scobby Doo theme party!

Throwing your own party can be easily done, and the ideas translate to many things you might find from your childhood.  Now all I have to do is decide if I want to be Scooby, or do I make a better Scrappy Doo?

Find a local bakery that can make you some tasty March Madness Theme Cupcakes!  Personalize the cupcakes with your college basketball team colors, favorite jerseys, or an assortment of great cupcakes that make your event just right!  These will for sure satisfy any fans hunger needs while inspiring support for the game!

Don't forget to decorate!  Cover the walls with pendants, posters, and streamers of the college basketball team of your choice!  Provide whistles to your guests to blow when the fouls are made, and when you are screaming at the referee for that intolerable call!  Foam fingers are great fun, too!  Make sure to let your guests know they need to wear their team colors, and of course bring the March Madness brackets!

Find a local party supply store with theme plates, napkins, decorations, and anything you could ever need to make the atmosphere perfect for heated March Madness watch parties!

Luck Be With Ye This Year – St. Patty's Day Party Inspiration

Now that Valentine's Day is behind us, it's time to get into the real swing of things for St. Patrick's Day.

Ah, St. Patrick's Day. That's lovable holiday that encourages everyone and their mother to wear green clothes, get green contact lenses, dye their hair green, dye their dogs green (I've seen it), and other all-too-chlorophyll-colored shenanigans. Speaking of shenanigans, we're spotlighting "luck" in this month's Wedding And Party Newsletter. As a preface to all of the goodies on the inside, here's a little taste of what you can expect this holiday.

Green is the theme. So go all out with green beverages, food and decorations. Don't forget our favorite St Paddy's Day character – the leprechaun and his pot of gold.  A cute St Paddy's decoration idea can be accomplished by hanging multi-colored streamers (rainbow) above a gold punch bowl filled with green punch on your beverage table. Freeze a ring of ice with gold coins, plastic shamrocks, or even real ones to make it even more festive! Real shamrocks are edible, they just don't taste good. (A good substitute would be fresh mint leaves.) Place a cardboard cut-out of a leprechaun on the table to complete the look.

What Irish celebration is complete without strong beverages? The traditional whiskey, Guinness or a good green beer should do the trick. If you don't like beer, dye ginger ale for the same effect.

For a fun, Irish themed dinner party set up a potato bar. These are becoming super popular for wedding receptions, but why not steal this stud-tastic idea for your St. Paddy's party. Set out a hot plate with a mound of baked potatoes in the center of your table and surround it with all the favorite potato fixin's: several kinds of cheeses, sour cream, fresh chives, bacon bits, butter, the list goes on and on. You could always serve more traditional Irish foods like corn beef and cabbage too.

Desserts for St. Patrick's day are a blast to make! Think green! Dye your desserts green. Shamrock-shaped cookies, cakes or cupcakes decorated with green icing and lots of green sprinkles, plastic shamrock toys, or other festive decorations. Have fun with it!

After you and all your guests are full of whiskey and green food, try a few Irish Drinking Songs to really put you in the spirit of the Irish. Search YouTube for several, easy to learn ones you can teach your friends. Of course if it's a really good Irish party, by the end of the night you'll be making up your own!

St Patrick's Day- Life Before Green Beer

Why Green Beer?

Green beer, now who thought that one up? Enter the mystical world of Saint Patrick's Day.  The day in which you can swig green beer, can try your hand at speaking like an Irishman, and look for "ye pot of gold."

Who is responsible for the green beer?  Who knows, seems no one wants to admit that, but for some odd reason they wanted to drink green-dyed beer.  Maybe the traditional St Patrick's Day beer, Guinness Stout, was to strong for them and not wanting fellow St Paddy's Day partygoers to know,  they dyed their light beer green.

What Is The relationship Between St Patrick's Day & Shamrocks?

The idea of the green beer might come from the shamrock.  It is associated with St Paddy's Day is because Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the trinity of the Christian's God to pagans. We use the shamrock during St Patrick's Day celebrations as a decoration or as part of our food designs.  Personally, I like shamrock-shaped cupcakes and cookies.  These finger foods are great for parties!

The Traditional Leprechaun & Pot-of-Gold

The pot o' gold comes from the tradition of leprechauns. A mythology Irish fairy, a leprechaun is the keeper of a pot-of-gold.  If you find a leprechaun, he is required to lead you to his pot-of-gold.

Some say that St Patrick used the leprechaun as an analogy of God — one who remains hidden and feared, but who has great wealth for those that find him.  Ireland's green green spring grass is the favorite hiding  spot for Leprechauns. This is another reason for using the color green on March 17th.

The mystical association of a  pot o' gold makes it a great idea for party decorations.  Take some wee little black pots fill them with gold-foiled chocolate coins and you've got yourself a mini pot' o' gold party favor.  While traditional Irish beer is usually dark, you could always put your light golden-colored beer  in a clear glass and call it your  pot o' gold.  A big pot can be filled with chips and dip for a tasty pot o' food.

A St Patrick's Day party is one of the easiest get-togethers you can throw. Green is your party color. Food is anything from corned beef and cabbage to chips and dips, shamrock cookies, sandwiches cut in shapes of shamrocks and beer, beer and more beer!  If you don't like beer, you could always dye ginger ale green.

Throw A Scrapbooking Party

A while back, I was thinking – wow I've got a lot of photos and mementos from the past year, what can I do with them.  Then it dawned on me – throw a Scrapbooking Party.  So, I went to work  creating a list of people to invite.  After all if I had lots of photos, I am certain my friends did also.

I invited my friends over for some serious scrapbooking and partying.  I rented a few tables and chairs from my local party rental store and set them up in my living room. I bought some crepe paper streamers to dressed up the tables along with some vinyl table cloths. I bought a few scrapbooks for myself and also in case my quests needed some.

I made a wonderful vodka cranberry punch. Purchased some cookies in the shapes of scissors, scrapbooks, and cameras from my local bakery. To round out the party food, I had a cold cut platter of sandwiches.

My friends arrived and straight away, we were laughing and sharing pictures and giving each other hints on how to make a scrapbook page. For me scrapbooking seems like a daunting task. Yet with my friends help, this party made scrapbooking a enjoyable and tons of fun. In fact, we had so much fun, I think it will become and annual party.

This party is one that can be thrown together quickly. It is great for sharing your photos and memories while making a task of sorting and storing photos absolutely fun.

Vodka Punch Recipe

  • 1/2 Quart of Vodka
  • 3/4 Quart Pineapple juice
  • 1 1/2 Quart Cranberry juice
  • 3/4 Quart Orange Juice

    • You can vary the quantities to suit your taste.  I also froze cranberry juice and orange juice in ice trays to keep the punch cold as well as to put in our glasses.  For a non-alcoholic version use ginger ale instead of vodka.

    Picture Perfect New Year's Eve Party

    Recently, I was at fund-raising event where the conversation turned to New Year's Eve parties.  One of the attendees at my table said, she and her friends have a picture party every New Year's Eve.  Unfamiliar with this theme, I wanted to know more.

    She explained that she and her husband do a bit of traveling and so do their friends. On New Year's Eve, they all get together and make a party out of sharing their past year's travel experiences.  They even have a rule that no one can show pictures of their trips till that night.  If you break that rule, you have to bring a $500 dollar bottle of wine to the New Year's Eve party.

    Evidently, no one has yet to break the rule. Since buying a $500 bottle would mean a down grade in next years travel plans, it has be a great incentive to keep the photos private until New Year's Eve.

    This sounded like a really neat party, so I naturally I wanted more details. She described how each couple is required to bring a dish/drink; either bought on their travels or made with a recipe from a restaurant or the place they traveled to.

    This party has been finessed over 10 years.  The first time they held this party, every one brought a dessert item or wine. Since then, the month before the party they draw what part of the meal or drinks they are responsible for bringing.

    Every year they get together on New Year's Eve eat food based on their travels, view each others pictures and ring in the New Year and the excitement of the past and future trips. This really does make for a picture perfect News Year's Eve party.

    Valentines day will be upon us in less than a week.  Don't wait until the last minute to plan a sweet Valentine's party for two. Now is the time decide on a party theme (say strawberries and champagne) and make preparations for the ultimate party. You will find that a strawberry and champagne party is easy, as well as romantic.

    What You Need For A Strawberries And Champagne Party

    As far as party supplies go, high quality rather than quantity is the key.  You will need champagne, strawberries, champagne flutes or wine glasses, a bouquet (or bouquets) of flowers and candles.  I, also, suggest a crystal bowl filled with sweet chocolate dipping sauce for the strawberries.

    What You Need To Know About Champagne

    Before purchasing champagne, you will need to know a few important facts.

    What is Champagne?     Champagne is the name given to carbonated white wines grown in the Champagne region of France.  Many other countries grow similar grapes and expose them to a second fermentation to create carbonation. However, these wines are called sparkling wines. Through a law/treaty or quality-control regulations, only wines from the Champagne region of France can be called Champagne. Most countries abide by this rule as a courtesy to France. (The French are very persnickety when it comes to their sparkling white wines and the region of Champagne.)

    Do I Need A Special Glass For Champagne? The proper glass for serving Champagne is a fluted one. Why? Because fluted glasses are tall and thin and have a very narrow rim.  This glass design allows for a concentration of bubbles in an effort to keep the Champagne from going flat.  The design also helps the tiny bubbles give your nose a bit of a tickle as you drink. If you do not wish to purchase special champagne flutes, you can go with a good quality crystal white wine glass.

    What Will Champagne Cost Me? I have purchased a few quality sparkling wines for around $25. Some Champagnes cost hundreds of dollars per bottle. Whether you're budget conscience or not, your local wine and spirit store can help you decided which champagne will suit your needs.

    Making The Strawberries Chocolaty Good

    Remember the suggestion of a crystal bowl filled with chocolate? Here is a recipe for a wonderful chocolate dipping sauce.

    Sweet Chocolate dipping sauce:

    • 5oz semi sweet  chocolate chips
    • 2/3c sweetened condensed  milk
    • 1/4c milk

    In a sauce pan, melt the semi sweet chocolate chips. As the chips melt stir in the sweetened condescend milk. Slowly mix the chips and milk. When they are just about blended add in the 1/4 cup of milk. Stir the mixture until till creamy.  Pour in to a bowl and serve.

    During the party, you can dip the strawberries in the chocolate sauce.  You can dip other fruit as well. Cherries, pineapple and bananas are all great. You can even cut up pound cake into bite size squares and dip them in the chocolate sauce. Tip: Place toothpicks in pound cake for easy dipping.
