Have you looked at the calendar recently? It's already late August! You what this means. Summer is slipping through our fingers and Labor Day is almost upon us! Autumn starts on September 22nd this year, and it's very possible that Labor Day could be our last day to have a little fun in the summer sun! Have no fear folks. Despite the short notice, I am here to help you plan a few enjoyable endeavors for this last summer hurrah!
Labor Day
Labor Day, as you know, has been a national holiday for approximately 129 years. It did not catch on in the public consciousness until a few years later, but it didn't take very long. After all, it is a day meant to honor the men and women who make up the US workforce.
Labor Day was intended to give workers an opportunity for one last vacation before summer ended. I've never been one to let a day of fun and excitement pass unremarked, so I thought I'd list a few of the more traditional Labor Day activities for any of you who are unsure how to celebrate!
Labor Day Traditions
- Parades – What could be better than gathering up your friends and family to watch a local parade? Most towns and cities hold a Labor Day parade, but if you can't find one to attend, you can salvage the party by watching one on television! That may sound less than appealing, but a few hastily thrown together snacks and a crowd made up of your preferred company will make any event memorable!
- Road Trip – Did somebody say road trip? Oh YEAH! Labor Day weekend is one of those rare 3-day affairs where you have an opportunity to actually drive somewhere, spend a day enjoying it, and then have time to drive back! Road trips are a great way to spend time with family or friends and enjoy some different surroundings for a while.
- Softball Game – If you can't attend a local baseball game or some other fun sporting event, just throw your own! Nothing says summer fun like an impromptu softball game. Batter up!
- Cookout – What summer holiday doesn't involve the grill and some traditional favorites? You're not looking for anything elaborate here, it's Labor Day after all, just toss on some hot dogs and a few burgers and call it good!
- Fireworks – The 4th of July normally gets the most fireworks publicity, but Labor Day is yet another holiday that traditionally features the shooting of fireworks. While the display may not be as elaborate as that on the 4th, it can still be a lot of fun. Some bottle rockets, a few roman candles and BOOM! you've got yourself a party!
As you can see from the list above, despite the name, Labor Day is all about relaxation. This holiday originated as a day for the workers of this country to get a day of rest. Honor the holiday and yourself by having fun, staying relaxed and hanging with friends!
