My daughter just celebrated her first birthday and my husband and I wanted to come up with a birthday party idea that would be really special for our daughter and memorable for our family and close friends. It was obvious Elisabeth wouldn't comprehend all that was taking place. Nevertheless, we wanted to come up with a memorable first birthday party idea.
We felt that many parents set a dangerous precedent with kids parties that are "over-the-top" with clowns, games, moon bounces, expensive party favors, catered food and the like, but we wanted her party to be about celebrating her. So, we took the theme of her nursery–ladybugs–and we asked a friend who makes cakes to come up with a birthday cake idea around that theme. Wow! Did she ever! She made a large cake for the crowd that looked like ladybugs crawling among green grass scattered with daisies, enclosed with a white picket fence. And Elisabeth had her own cake–a perfectly decorated lady cake with blue eyes just like hers! Having two ladybug theme cakes was a tremendous hit. In fact, giving Elizabeth her very own 1st birthday cake was a fantastic idea. We didn't have to worry about her sticking her hands in the cake because it was all for her.
We kept the paper products simple with “1st Birthday” plates, cups and napkins, and bunches of balloons to tie all the colors together. Elisabeth enjoyed the balloons more than the gifts she received and played with them for the next few days—supervised, of course!
We found you don’t have to spend a fortune on kids’ parties to make them memorable. Sometimes the simpler the party, the bigger the real reason for the celebration—your child.
