The holiday is just days away, so we thought it would be nice to be reminded of the holiday traditions. With so many traditions, old and new, there may be one out there that your family may want to begin. Traditions are great ways to share the special season with your family. It brings you closer together and is something that you and your family can look forward to each year. So go ahead and start a new holiday tradition to get into the holiday spirit!
Gift Giving Traditions: Along with the holiday season comes the gift giving tradition. This varies among different cultures and even different families. Some open all their presents on December 25th, spread them out over the 12 days of Christmas or some open one gift on Christmas Eve and the rest on Christmas Day.
Spreading the cheer and keeping the holiday spirit alive over 12 days seems exciting. However, some kiddos might not see this too exciting with the last day ending on January 6th. Everyone does it somewhat different. So choose a tradition that's best for your family.
Feast For All: With the holiday season, a big feast is prepared. Again, everyone does it differently. Americans normally prepare a big feast on Christmas day to share with their close loved ones. In France, they can't wait. After midnight mass, they serve their feast right then.
Food varies among cultures and traditions too. In Latin America, they feast on rice, peas and roasted pork. Japan marks Christmas by a special dessert, which is like fruit cake. Whatever your tradition may be, it's filled with delicious holiday treats for the family!
Mistletoe:Do we think of kissing underneath the mistletoe? Of course we do! However, it is said that people hung green in their house to represent the upcoming Spring weather and fertility. If you believe fertility, you may or may not want to hang this in your home.
Stocking By The Fire: Do the members in your family all have a stocking hung nicely by the fireplace. Possibly on the tree, on the wall or in a random place in your home because not everyone has a fireplace. However, they're there. Where does this originate from? Of course, it's featured in the book "Twas The Night Before Christmas" that we remember it from.
It is said that good ole' Saint Nicholas dropped gold coins down the fireplace and the stockings caught them. You may take on this tradition and put money in your family's stockings or fill them with treats and goodies. Christmas stockings are such a fun touch to the holiday season.
These are just some of the holiday traditions that are more popular. However, there are tons and tons of ideas out there for you and your family to try. Make Christmas breakfast, read a holiday story each year, take turns opening gifts so people can watch, fill up a box of presents and take it to the needy, buy a new family ornament each year, put just a few presents underneath the tree and when the kiddos go to sleep, fill it up with the ones from Santa or go caroling each year. There are so many traditions out there, just choose the one that your family enjoys the most. The greatest tradition of all is spending it with your family and loved ones.
