Today is World Smile Day. This fun day was celebrated for the first time in 1999 to honor Harvey Ball, the artist who created the smiley face. Mr. Ball felt that the original meaning of the smiley face was becoming too commercialized and wanted to set aside one day each year for everyone to take time to smile and pass out acts of kindness. Now, the first Friday each October is dedicated to World Smile Day. Here are a few ways you can celebrate!
Wear a Smile
Wear a smile, not just one your face, but on your shirt or another piece of clothing. Smiles are contagious. Take the time to share yours, and maybe even act a little silly if you need to put a smile on someone else's face.
Hand Out Smiles
Find smiley face themed buttons, stickers, tattoos, bracelets, or any other little trinket that is easy to carry with you. Give one to the cashier at the store, or your co-workers. It will be a unique reminder to smile, and could make their day that much better!
Pay It Forward
Take the time to participate in random acts of kindness. Donate to a local charity, or pay for a family's meal at your favorite restaurant. Tape some change to the vending machine at work for that person who might not be able to afford lunch, or just so someone can have a snack. Random acts of kindness don't have to be huge. Remember, it's the little things in life that count.
