My family and I recently went bowling and had a great time. While we were sorely (no pun intended!) out of practice, we had some friendly competition, got a little exercise, and had some great laughs. The food wasn't all that bad either. This is just the kind of activity you need when getting ready for the big wedding day and would be a great alternative to a stuffy, sit-down rehearsal dinner. When nerves are shot, stress is high, and the wedding party and family is tired from all the planning and preparation, having a fun, relaxing rehearsal dinner is a much-welcomed break.
Casual is the name of the game–no high heels or ties required. Arrange with the bowling alley to have a sufficient number of lanes reserved to accommodate the wedding party, along with an area for the meal. What better comfort food than hot dogs, chips, nachos and ice cream? Add pitchers of soft drinks and beer and you've got the makings of a satisfying and relaxing rehearsal dinner. If you'd like, have a bakery make a special cake or cookies shaped like bowling balls or pins to round out the meal.
As for the bowling, competition is the cure-all for nervous pre-wedding jitters. Divvy up into families, boys vs. girls, etc. for some exciting games. If you really want to add to fun, get inexpensive t-shirts made for every member of the wedding party with the bride and groom's names and the wedding date on the back, and their name on the front. You can even give prizes to the winning teams and individuals with the highest scores. The prizes? Bowling gift certificates, of course!
