Tired of the same old family gathering? Or just want to start your own tradition with some of your closest friends? Host a Friendsgiving! Traditionally held the Wednesday before or the Friday after Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving is a great opportunity to take some of the stress out of the normal holiday routine and just relax (and eat) with your besties. Here are five tips to help make your Friendsgiving even more memorable.
Don't let the host become overwhelmed.
The host is usually responsible for the turkey and gravy. That's a pretty huge responsibility. They are also responsible for making sure everyone else know what they are bringing, and setting an amazing dining table. All that responsibility can make a first time party host pretty nervous. Help them out by lending an extra hand in the planning or decorating.
Remember, variety is the spice of life.
Sure, you need the traditional mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie, but don't be afraid to have your guests bring something different. Add a traditional Chinese or Italian dish to you Friendsgiving. Branch out from pie and have cheesecake or a banana split bar instead!
Keep the food and drink flowing.
Don't forget to have plenty of snacks and appetizers available. This will keep everyone happy and energetic while they wait for the main meal. Also, make sure a couple of people are in charge of bringing good wine to have with the meal. A light red, like Pinot Noir or a Zinfandel, or a slightly dry white like a Riesling are good choices to serve with your meal.
Play "Be Thankful" Roulette.
Have everyone write down one or two things they are thankful for when they arrive and place all the slips in a container. Throughout the meal, pass around the container and have each person draw out a paper to read aloud. Everyone then has to figure out who the paper belongs to.
Enjoy the company of those around you!
You have chosen to surround yourself with these people for a reason. Take the time to appreciate them and just enjoy the moment!
